Ariel is a fictional character and the protagonist of Disney's 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid. She is a sixteen-year-old mermaid princess residing in the underwater kingdom of Atlantica.

Daughter of King Triton and Queen Athena, Ariel is known for her rebellious spirit and fascination with the human world. This curiosity is fueled by her collection of human artifacts gathered from shipwrecks and kept secret in a grotto.

Driven by her longing to experience life on land, Ariel makes a fateful deal with the sea witch Ursula. In exchange for her voice, she is granted human legs for three days, during which she must receive "true love's kiss" from Prince Eric to remain human permanently.

Throughout the film, Ariel navigates the challenges of her newfound human form while attempting to win Prince Eric's affection. She faces obstacles orchestrated by Ursula, ultimately requiring the intervention of her father and the defeat of the sea witch to secure her happiness and the unity of the human and mermaid worlds.
